Thom Cheer Team Reaches Dizzying Heights

MAY 8, 2023 — In describing the evolution of the Thom Cheer Team, nothing short of stratospheric could apply!

The fledgling group was the brainchild of teacher Melanie Vollman, who started the team at Thom Collegiate in 2009 with a mere 10 untrained athletes. Navigating the arena of competition was a very difficult process and their first event in Moose Jaw did not produce noteworthy results. It did, however, provide an invaluable lesson about preparation and reaching the required skill level before stepping on a stage. This lesson led to a two-year hiatus from competition.

Learning Michif and Cree

APRIL 4, 2023 -- Cassandra Rieger’s Grade 4 students at George Lee School have had the good fortune of spending a significant amount of time this school year with Elder Lewis. She accompanied them to Treaty 4 Days and has taught them many words in Cree and Michif. Cassandra and her students always look forward to spending time with Elder Lewis and learning from her.

Recently, Elder Lewis created a Bingo-style game where the students used their previously learned words in Cree and Michif and learned some new words and numbers to 10 as well. They had an amazing time!

Thank you so much to Elder Lewis for her dedication and time spent in sharing her vast knowledge and beautiful culture and language!

A Blanket is More Than a Blanket

2 months 3 weeks ago
A Blanket is More Than a Blanket

MARCH 16, 2023 -- A blanket is defined as “a large piece of woolen or similar material used as a bed covering or other covering for warmth” (Oxford University Press). However, the simple commodity known as a blanket has different significances depending on the cultural or ethnic background.

Indigenous cultures across North America made and used blankets in different ways depending on their ecological surroundings. Some blankets were made of various plant fibres found in their environments, while others were made of animal skins from hunting, and some were made of a combination of both plant and animals. Indigenous blankets also had their own evolution of development as settlers and traders moved westward and the country was expanded for the Canadian Government.
